A Comprehensive Guide to Skilled Migrant Visas in Australia

Australia is a popular destination for people from all over the world looking to relocate for work, study, or simply to change scenery. The process of moving to Australia, however, can be challenging, and applying for a visa can take a long time. In this blog, we will discuss the processing time and application processes for four types of visas for skilled migrants: the 189, 190, 191, and 491 visas. 189 Visa (Skilled Independent Visa) The 189 visa is a points-based visa designed for skilled workers who want to live and work permanently in Australia. To be eligible for this visa, you must meet the points test threshold and be invited to apply. The application process for the 189 visa involves several steps, including:
  1. Check whether your occupation is on the skilled occupation list (Having 65 points makes you eligible for the visa)
  2. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect
  3. Wait for an invitation to apply for the visa
  4. Lodge a complete visa application within 60 days of receiving the invitation
  5. Provide all required documents and information
  6. Wait for the application to be processed
The cost for 189 Visa Applications is AUD 4,240, whereas the processing time varies from 17 months up to 30 months. Upon successfully receiving the visa, the applicant is allowed to stay in Australia permanently. 190 Visa (Skilled Nominated Visa) The 190 visa is also a points-tested visa for skilled workers who want to live and work in a specific state or territory in Australia. It would be best if you were nominated by a state or territory government agency to be eligible for this visa.  The application process for the 190 visa is similar to the 189 visa, with the additional step of obtaining a nomination from a state or territory government agency. The steps are as follows:
  1. Submit an EOI in SkillSelect and select the state or territory you want to live and work in
  2. Wait for an invitation to apply for the visa
  3. Obtain nomination from the state or territory government agency
  4. Lodge a complete visa application within 60 days of receiving the invitation
  5. Provide all required documents and information
  6. Wait for the application to be processed
Similar to the 189 visa, the cost for a 190 Visa Application is also AUD 4,240, whereas the processing time varies from 87 days up to 36 months. Upon successfully receiving the visa, the applicant is allowed to stay in Australia permanently.  191 Visa (Permanent Residence-Skilled Regional Visa) The 191 visa is a permanent residency visa that allows successful applicants who have lived and worked in Australia’s designated regional areas to live and work permanently in Australia. Unlike the 189 and 190 visa, the 191 visa has a different application process. It is designed for skilled migrants who have held a 491 or 494 visa for at least three years and have met the requirements for permanent residency. The cost for a 191-visa application is AUD 435.  The processing time for a 191 visa, is assessed on a case-by-case basis. Actual processing times can vary due to individual circumstances, such as:
  1. Whether you have lodged a complete application with all necessary supporting documents
  2. How quickly do you respond to requests for more information
  3. How long it takes to perform required checks on the supporting information provided
  4. How long it takes to receive information from external agencies, particularly for health, character, and national security requirements
Additionally, the availability of places in the migration program can impact processing time.  491 Visa (Skilled Work Regional Visa)  The 491 visa is a points-tested visa for skilled workers who want to live and work in a regional area in Australia. It would help if you were nominated by a state or territory government agency or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated regional area to be eligible for this visa.  The application process for the 491 visa is as follows:
  1. Submit an EOI in SkillSelect and select the state or territory you want to live and work in or obtain sponsorship from an eligible relative
  2. Wait for an invitation to apply for the visa
  3. Lodge a complete visa application within 60 days of receiving the invitation
  4. Provide all required documents and information
  5. Wait for the application to be processed
Similar to the 189 and 190 visa, the cost for the 491 Visa Application is also AUD 4,240, whereas the processing time varies from 17 months up to 30 months. After receiving the visa, the applicant is permitted to stay in Australia for a period of five years. They are, however, eligible to apply for permanent residency three years after their visa is granted. Conclusion Applying for a visa to move to Australia can be a complicated and time-consuming procedure, but it is critical to follow the correct processes and present all required documents and information to enhance your chances of success. It is critical to remember that application processes and processing timeframes might change, so it is crucial to keep yourself updated with the latest information from the Department of Home Affairs. It is advisable to speak with a qualified migration agent or immigration lawyer who can assess your alternatives and guide you through the application procedure.
