Are you dreaming of immigrating to Australia or looking for ways to bring someone over? Well, sponsored visas are among the easiest ways to do so. Whether it is a family member or a friend or you’re a skilled worker looking to go on your own, this blog can help you in more ways than one.

From all the different types of sponsored visas to their eligibility criteria and even processing times, we’ve gathered all the information you need to apply and secure a sponsorship visa.

So without further ado, let’s get right into it!

What Are Sponsored Visas in Australia?

Sponsorship Visas Your Path to Australian Residency____ Sponsored Visas allow an individual to sponsor a family member or close relative outside of Australia , to come and live in the country. The sponsor must prove that they can financially support the sponsored family member for a minimum period and provide evidence that they have a genuine relationship with the sponsor.

Besides family sponsorship visas, there are also employer sponsored visas that allow Australian businesses and companies to sponsor a skilled worker from another country to come, work and live in Australia.

All Types Of Sponsored Visas

Sponsorship Visas Your Path to Australian Residency____ Australia offers various sponsorship visa options for individuals and employers. Here are some of the most popular sponsorship visas:

  • Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482): This visa is designed for employers who wish to sponsor skilled workers from overseas to fill temporary skill shortages within their business.

  • Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186): This visa allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers for permanent residence.

  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 494): This visa allows skilled workers to live and work in regional Australia.

  • 491 Visa Family Sponsored Stream: This is a temporary visa designed for skilled workers who wish to live, work, and study in regional Australia. It requires applicants to be sponsored by a family member residing in a designated regional area of Australia.

While it usually takes 3-4 months to process sponsorship visas, it can take around 10-12 months for the whole process from start to finish. Also, this number is subject to change and you can check the latest update on the

Friend Sponsored Pathways

Sponsorship Visas Your Path to Australian Residency____ While there are many pathways for sponsorship, most of them require a familial relationship or an employer-employee relationship. There isn’t typically a “friend” sponsorship pathway for visas. However, you can support their application for a tourist visa by offering an invitation letter that outlines how you will help them during their stay in Australia.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)

This temporary visa allows an Australian employer to sponsor a skilled worker from overseas to fill an open position in their company.

Age Limit

There is no age limit for the 482 Visa. This is one of the major advantages of this visa as compared to other skilled visas which usually have age limits.

The 482 Visa allows you to work in Australia for your sponsoring employer. However, your work rights are restricted to your sponsor, and you cannot work for other employers unless you transfer your visa or are granted another visa that allows you to work for another employer.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Occupation: You must have a skilled occupation that is on the

    Australian Skills Shortage List

  • Job Offer: You must have a job offer from an Australian employer who has been approved by the Department of Home Affairs.

  • English Language Proficiency: You are required to demonstrate that you meet certain minimum standards of English language proficiency by taking and achieving a specific result in an English language test, unless exemptions apply.

  • Health Assessment: You must pass a health assessment.

  • Skills and Experience: You must be employed in your nominated profession and have worked for your nominator. You should have worked in your nominated occupation for at least 2 years before applying for a 482 visa.
